Description

Girlan Lagrein Alto Adige DOC expresses Alpine strength and timeless elegance. Lagrein is a native grape variety that accepts no compromises and perfectly reflects the contrasting climates of Alto Adige. The Girlan Winery cultivates these vineyards in the most suitable terroirs of the appellation, characterized by warm, pebble-rich soils that ensure optimal drainage.

The microclimate combines abundant Mediterranean daytime sunshine with cold, descending Alpine winds at night. This marked temperature difference is the secret to the wine's profile: it locks the aromatic precursors into the skins and preserves a vibrant acidity, essential for the wine's longevity.

The Winemaking Vision

Girlan applies meticulous precision to every single bottle, rejecting facile commercial embellishments. The goal in the cellar is a subtle intervention, aimed exclusively at protecting the integrity of the fruit without masking it with wood. The result is a red wine with a distinctive identity, proud of its austere character, with a highly clean style and remarkable aging potential.

Characteristics of Girlan Lagrein

The analytical approach highlights a structured wine, whose main strength is the coherence between nose and palate.

  • Appearance: The wine presents a deep, dense, and almost impenetrable ruby red color. The vivid purple reflections testify to the youthful color and the excellent extractive health of the liquid mass.
  • Nose: The impact on the nose is intense, clean, and aristocratic. The ripe, red fruit is prominent, dominated by distinct notes of black cherry and wild blackberry. With oxygenation, complex nuances of licorice, bitter cocoa, and a hint of spice and earth emerge.
  • Taste: The palate is bold, dense, and enveloping. The tannins are dense but precisely crafted to be velvety and free of rough edges. The balance between the glycerine softness of the fruit and the vertical freshness creates a dynamic, smooth sip with exceptional persistence.

Recommended pairings for Lagrein Alto Adige DOC wine

The structural characteristics of Girlan's Lagrein—marked by smooth tannins, crisp acidity, and a dark aromatic profile—require pairings with dishes rich in succulence, a sweet tendency, and spicy or smoky elements.

Local cuisine and game

  • Venison or roe deer with cranberry reduction: A traditional Alto Adige pairing. The intrinsic sweetness of the game blends with the freshness of the wine, while the woody notes in the glass recall the aromas of the dish.
  • Tyrolean beef goulash: The richness of the spice and paprika in the dish is perfectly supported by the body of the wine. Tannins cleanse the palate with every sip, restoring flavor balance.

Red meats and intense grilled dishes

  • Grilled rib-eye steak (rare): The meat's noble fat is ideally contrasted by the freshness of the wine, while the smoky note of the grill blends with the cocoa and dark spice notes of the Lagrein.
  • Braised meats and roasted leg of lamb with aromatic herbs: Long, succulent dishes benefit from the extractive complexity of this bottle, capable of holding its own with intense and persistent flavors.

Matured and blue cheeses

  • Very matured hard cheeses (Pecorino d'Alpeggio or Parmigiano Reggiano over 36 months): The cheese's savory flavor and crumbly texture are enveloped and softened by the dark fruit of the wine.
  • Blue cheeses (natural Gorgonzola or Castelmagno): Lagrein tames the cheese's spicy notes, transforming the taste into a finish of great elegance and cleanliness.

Temperature and serving protocol

Girlan Lagrein best expresses its structural complexity at a temperature strictly between 16-18°C. Gently aerating the bottle about 30 minutes before serving allows the liquid to gradually reach thermal equilibrium and optimal oxygenation.

Choosing the right glass

This wine requires a large glass with a wide rim (Balloon or Bordeaux style). The wide bowl of the glass is crucial because it promotes rapid oxygenation, helping the wine unfold its intense bouquet.

At the same time, the slightly converging top section directs the aromas directly to the nose, softening the impact of the alcohol. This specific geometry directs the flow of the liquid toward the center-back of the tongue, enhancing the softness of the fruit and balancing the grape's natural acidity.
