Capanna
Capanna Wines: Historic Brunello di Montalcino from the Montosoli Cru
The Capanna agricultural estate was born from the passion and sacrifice of Giuseppe Cencioni, assisted by his sons Benito and Franco. Located in the prestigious Montosoli area, north of Montalcino, the winery represents a historical pillar of the region: they began bottling their own wines as early as the 1960s, and shortly after Brunello di Montalcino was granted DOC status in 1966, Giuseppe became one of the 25 historic founders of the Consorzio del Vino Brunello di Montalcino.
Always managed exclusively as a family business, the estate is currently run by Patrizio and Amedeo, representing the third and fourth generations, who personally oversee both the agronomic and enological operations. Capanna preserves a production style deeply rooted in Tuscan tradition, passed down from generation to generation, while constantly looking toward the future through continuous structural and technological investments.
The Montosoli Terroir: Elegance, Galestro Soil, and a Unique Microclimate
Capanna’s vineyards are located in the Montosoli area, unanimously considered one of the best Crus in the entire Montalcino territory. The unique microclimate of the northern zone, characterized by an optimal temperature shift between day and night even during the hottest months, perfectly combines with soils composed mainly of galestro (clayey schists) and rich in rock fragments.
This exceptional combination results in the production of wines with great structure and excellent acidity, yet always distinguished by a remarkable elegance and aromatic finesse.
Vineyards and the Organic Certification of Capanna
Over the years, the vineyard surface has grown to the current 25 hectares, an ideal size that still allows for complete, artisanal family management. Consistently dedicated to sustainability and improving the vineyard's ecosystem, the winery has crowned this commitment by achieving official organic certification for its vineyards. To maintain soil structure and fertility, natural grassing and green manure (cover cropping) practices are implemented across all vine-growing land.
Situated at an altitude between 250 and 300 meters above sea level, the vines are trained using the bilateral spurred cordon system. Meticulous care has been dedicated to selecting the best clones of Sangiovese (which covers about 80% of the estate) and Moscato Bianco, a historical variety present in the region since the 16th century. Small plots of Merlot and Pinot Grigio complete the rows. Every single task—from bud selection in spring to canopy management, cluster thinning before veraison, and manual harvesting—is executed with tailored precision.
The Production: From Brunello Riserva to Moscadello di Montalcino
With an annual production of around 80,000 to 100,000 bottles, Capanna produces all the most important appellations of the region. The range includes the world-renowned Brunello di Montalcino DOCG (also crafted in the prestigious "Selezione" and "Riserva" versions), the Rosso di Montalcino DOC, and the rare Moscadello di Montalcino DOC (including Late Harvest/Vendemmia Tardiva).
The selection is completed by Sant’Antimo DOC wines (Rosso and Pinot Grigio), three appealing Toscana IGT designations (SanGioBì, Rosina, and Rosso del Cerro).
