Cantina Girlan

Founded in 1923 in a 16th-century farmhouse, Cantina Girlan today represents one of the most prestigious cooperatives in Alto Adige. Born from the union of 24 winemakers led by founding president Johann Kofler Krautschneider, the winery has transformed a strong rural tradition into a modern winemaking project, internationally recognized for its quality and territorial identity.

Today, approximately 200 winemaking families passionately cultivate over 230 hectares of vineyards located in the finest areas of Oltradige and Bassa Atesina, working in close collaboration with winemaker Gerhard Kofler. From this ongoing dialogue between experience, terroir, and innovation, authentic, elegant wines are born, deeply rooted in their origins.

A history of vision and innovation

Over the course of its history, Cantina Girlan has marked fundamental milestones in Alto Adige viticulture:

  • 1961 – valorization of the Gschleier subzone with the first Vernatsch dedicated exclusively to this terroir.
  • 1975 – birth of the famous Fass Nr. 9, a selection of the best Vernatsch grapes.
  • 1980 – strong specialization in Pinot Noir with the launch of Trattmannhof Mazon Pinot Noir.
  • 2012 – debut of Vigna Ganger Mazon Pinot Noir Riserva, sourced from a unique monopole vineyard with a unique microclimate and exhibition.
  • 2016 – architectural expansion of the winery, where historic tradition and contemporary design coexist in perfect harmony.
  • 2023 – celebration of 100 years of business, with wines now distributed in over 40 countries.

A journey that demonstrates continuous pursuit of quality, always respecting the territorial identity.

Production philosophy: tradition and modernity in balance

Cantina Girlan's philosophy is based on two fundamental pillars:

  • Promotion of native Alto Adige grape varieties, such as Vernatsch, Pinot Bianco, and Pinot Noir.
  • Territorial interpretation of international grape varieties, including Chardonnay and Sauvignon.

Each wine is created following The rhythms of nature, with advanced winemaking technologies integrated with traditional practices. The goal is to convey authenticity, aromatic precision, and personality to the glass, creating labels capable of uniquely expressing the region.

The terroir of Alto Adige: between the Alps and the Mediterranean

Alto Adige is one of the smallest but most diverse winemaking areas in Italy. The Cantina Girlan vineyards extend between 200 and 1,000 meters above sea level, in an extraordinary climate where:

  • the Alps protect the vineyards from cold winds,
  • the Adige Valley favors the Mediterranean influence,
  • the significant temperature variations give the wines aromatic elegance and great longevity.

The sandy and clayey soils, rich in minerals and limestone, contribute to the creation of wines of great finesse, freshness, and aging potential.

Sustainability and future vision

Cantina Girlan is committed to sustainable agriculture, with the aim of preserving the land, biodiversity, and communities. From vineyard management to production, every choice is geared towards ensuring quality, environmental responsibility, and continuity for future generations.
