The Old Historic Vines and Pedoclimatic Convergence of TRATTMANN Pinot Noir Riserva
The TRATTMANN Pinot Noir Riserva DOC represents one of the historic cornerstones of Cantina Girlan, conceived to demonstrate the complexity and evolutionary potential of the estate's longest-standing vineyards. The quality foundation of this selection builds on the synergy between the finest and oldest corporate plots distributed across two complementary geographical areas. The primary portion of the grapes grows on the eastern slope of Bassa Atesina, at an altitude ranging between 380 and 430 meters above sea level, where the vines take root in deep soils composed of clay and limestone matrices. The second fraction originates instead from the hillside belt of Oltradige, situated at approximately 500 meters of elevation, characterized by morainic deposits resting on volcanic porphyry rock. This agronomic and evolutionary combination gives the Riserva a dense polyphenolic texture of extraordinary breadth.
Cellar Protocol: Gravity-Fed Vinification, Partial Stems, and Three-Stage Aging
The processing of the 2023 vintage applies rigorous technological criteria oriented toward maximum protection of the raw material. The manual harvest is performed using small bins to preserve fruit integrity. In the cellar, the destemmed grapes—integrated with a portion equal to 10% of whole clusters with stems unremoved to enhance freshness and the tannic architecture—are transferred exclusively by gravity into stainless steel tanks. The primary extraction cycle and skin-contact maceration extend for a period of 20-24 days. Upon completion of malolactic fermentation, the evolutionary path is structured across three stages: the wine first ages for 12 months in barriques and small 12-hectoliter wooden casks, then undergoes an 8-month stabilization rest in large 70-hectoliter oak casks, and finishes with an additional 8 months of refinement in glass before its commercial release.
Sensory Profile of TRATTMANN Trentino Alto Adige red wine
The interaction between the longevity of old vines in Bassa Atesina and the structured, fractional maturation in both large and small oak casks outlines an organoleptic framework of absolute precision and tertiary richness.
- Blend and Classification: 100% Pinot Noir / Alto Adige DOC
- Analytical Data (2023 Vintage): Alcohol Content: 14.00% Vol. / Aging: 12 months in small wood, 8 months in large oak casks, 8 months in glass.
- Visual Assessment: Limpid ruby red color, embellished with elegant and subtle garnet highlights that foreshadow its proper tertiary evolution in the glass.
- Olfactory Framework: Broad, intense, and deep bouquet. Consistent scents of ripe red fruit, cherry, and sour cherry stand out on the nose, integrated by clean notes of wild berries and refined spicy background nuances.
- Palate Characteristics: The tasting reveals a dry, delicate profile endowed with excellent verticality. The progression displays a full, vinous, and enveloping body, supported by a dense and velvety tannic texture that guides the pour toward a finish of extraordinary persistence.
Service Guidelines and Gastronomic Pairings
The thickness of the architecture, the acid balance, and the complexity of this Riserva Pinot Noir make it an ideal companion for high-end land-based cuisine.
- Stable Pairings: It pairs with absolute elegance alongside prominent dishes based on roasted or grilled red meats, large feathered and furred game preparations, traditional stews, pot roasts, and selections of pungent or long-aged cheeses.
- Serving Method: To promote the development of the rich aromatic framework and ensure the integration of the polyphenolic components, a serving temperature of 18 - 20°C is recommended.
Evolutionary Potential and Storage
The TRATTMANN Riserva displays solid and proven longevity, possessing an extractive heritage in the cellar that easily extends beyond 10-15 years. Horizontal bottle storage is recommended in a completely dark environment, free from vibrations and at a constant temperature.
