Why the winemaker recommends Vena Rossa
Because it represents the still and more structured version of Gutturnio, produced by Castello di Luzzano in the Gutturnio Classico area. The name of the wine recalls the "gutturnium," the ancient Roman silver goblet used to drink the finest wine, bearing witness to a tradition rooted in centuries past. The Barbera and Bonarda grapes are left in the fermenters for 5–6 days with short, frequent pump-overs at a controlled temperature (26–27°C), a process that achieves the perfect balance between vinosity and fruity notes. After racking, the wine completes both alcoholic and malolactic fermentation, followed by aging with several rackings during the winter before being bottled in spring.
Characteristics of still red Gutturnio wine
It presents an intense, bright ruby red color. On the nose, it is deeply fruity and vinous. On the palate, it is full-bodied, savory, and dry: a perfectly balanced wine that retains the strength of Barbera, softened and rounded out by the aroma and pleasantness of Bonarda. It retains its best characteristics for about 2–3 years. If you love this structured style, discover the other red wines of Emilia Romagna as well.
