Why the winemaker recommends Carlino
Because it is the most prestigious and recognized expression of Oltrepò Pavese, produced by Castello di Luzzano in the territory of Rovescala, the ideal habitat for Croatina. The grapes come from 30 to 45-year-old vines, cultivated on marly-limestone soil on the highest part of the south-facing hill. After destemming and crushing, the wine undergoes prolonged skin contact in fermenters before aging for at least a year in the ancient cellar prior to bottling. A slow and rigorous process that earned it 92 Falstaff points in the 2026 tasting by Othmar Kiem and Simon Staffler.
Characteristics of Bonarda red wine
It presents a deep, bright ruby red color with violet reflections. On the nose, it is intense and penetrating, with notes of violet and occasional spicy hints; the Falstaff tasting highlighted aromas of blackberry jelly, violets, bread crust, licorice, and cinnamon. On the palate, it is full-bodied, dry, and juicy, featuring well-crafted young tannins and excellent aromatic persistence. If you love this intense, structured profile, these wines are often blended with Bonarda itself in the Oltrepò tradition.
Recommended pairings for Oltrepò Pavese Bonarda wine
It pairs perfectly with pasta dishes served with meat sauces and certain risottos, including the famous "risotto al Bonarda." Ideal with red meats—preferably seasoned with herbs—pork dishes in general, and game: an absolute must-try with protein-rich meals.
