Merlot a variety often forgotten, especially in light of the way in which the film "Sideways" has tacked it. I too fell victim. And yet, this was recommended to me by a colleague as a proof of surprise. It has depth, character and elegance all in one. The notes of blackberry and black cherry are evident and offer a medium balance of tannins.
