The Riesling Alto Adige DOC by Schloss Englar is an organic white wine of extraordinary purity and territorial precision. Produced in an extremely limited run of just 2,391 bottles, this single-varietal wine comes from 35-year-old Guyot-trained vines located in Eppan Berg (Appiano Monte) at 500 meters above sea level, boasting a perfect southern exposure. Here, the morainic soils with high limestone content provide the king of white grapes with an unmistakable mineral backbone and exceptional aging potential.
Winemaking: The Precision of Three Separate Harvests
In pursuit of absolute quality, the winery carried out a meticulous manual selection across three successive harvests from late September to mid-October, ensuring every single cluster was picked at its optimal ripeness. Each batch was fermented separately using indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks. To build complexity while preserving the grape's vertical profile, the wine aged for 8 months on the fine lees, partly in stainless steel and partly in oak tonneaux, before final blending.
Tasting Notes: The Perfect Sugar-Acid Play
The Schloss Englar Riesling 2024 opens on the nose with a vibrant, fruit-driven bouquet of apricot and peach, layered with delicate nuances of wild hay, fresh grass, and alpine herbs. On the palate, it strikes a brilliant balance between nearly bone-dry sugar levels and a crisp, electric acidity, creating a texture that is simultaneously sleek and smooth. The palate is framed by a long-lasting, deep mineral core, hinting at a cellaring potential of 5 years or more.
Food Pairings and Sommelier Serving Tips
The unique and Gastronomic character of this premium Alto Adige white wine makes it highly versatile. It is delightful as a standalone aperitif or alongside a wide array of elegant starters. It pairs beautifully with seafood dishes and light vegetable courses, acting as a textbook match for white asparagus. For a truly memorable pairing, try this Riesling with artisanal goat cheese.
The Story of the 2024 Vintage
The 2024 vintage was defined by extreme and demanding weather conditions. A dry start to the season paved the way for early budding, which was followed by a cool, rainy spring and a humid summer with frequent showers. This required rigorous and attentive hands-on management in the vineyards to capture the true essence of the estate's unique mountain terroir. Fortunately, a dry autumn followed with perfect harvest conditions, bringing warm days and chilly nights. Overall a fresh and fruit-forward vintage, 2024 delivered lighter-bodied yet structured white wines that beautifully showcase their alpine roots.
