Terroir and Vineyard Parceling of Barolo Gattera
The Barolo Gattera DOCG embodies the deepest single-vineyard expression from the historical Cordero di Montezemolo estate in La Morra. The Gattera MGA (Additional Geographical Mention) extends over 11 hectares and constitutes the production heart of the winery. This surface area concentrates multiple agronomic variables linked to diverse exposures, altitudes, and clones. To enhance this biodiversity, the hillside is divided into 8 sectors managed through separate vinifications. The fruit for this label is sourced exclusively from a core of two plots featuring old vines aged over fifty years, designed to offer outstanding character.
Agronomic Features and Cellar Protocol in La Morra
The vineyards thrive on the classic soils of the Annunziata sub-zone, composed of sedimentary limestone-clay marls that grant the Nebbiolo a sharp olfactory refinement. Technical management leverages the biological balance of these old vines to obtain low yields rich in dry extracts. Hand-harvesting targets the fruit of these historical parcels, which undergo fermentation in a single temperature-controlled vat. The subsequent maturation in oak casks is calibrated to respect the density of the pulp and polish the tannic weave, allowing tertiary layers to unfold completely prior to bottling.
Sensory profile of Barolo Gattera
The synergy between historical vine roots and the protected microclimate shapes a clean organoleptic identity with extensive structural depth.
- Appellation, Blend and ABV: 100% Nebbiolo / Barolo DOCG MGA / 14.50% ABV.
- Visual Presentation: Intense garnet red color with warm reflections and excellent structural weight in the glass.
- Aromatic Bouquet: Broad and forward nose, showcasing dominant notes of marasca cherry, ripe red berries, dried violet, sweet spices, and undertones of forest floor.
- Palate Texture: Full-bodied and well-rounded. The mid-palate delivers a velvety texture where dense yet flexible tannins support an elegant framework, driving a complex drinking experience into a long finish.
Food Pairings and Serving Recommendations
The bold extraction and robust tannic weave of this premium Nebbiolo demand savory culinary options.
- Pairings: Pairs naturally with beef fillet with porcini mushrooms, traditional Piedmontese roasts, rich pasta options with game ragù, stews, and long-aged hard cheeses.
- Serving Conditions: To allow the complex aromatic layers to unfold and soften the tannins, serve at a steady temperature of 16 - 18°C.
