The Chardonnay Belasy Riserva Alto Adige DOC by Schloss Englar is a white wine of extraordinary caliber, warmth, and complexity, beautifully crafted to defy time. This premium Riserva originates from vines ranging between 15 and 35 years old, trained in the Guyot system and nestled at an ideal altitude of 500 to 550 meters above sea level. The secret to its aristocratic profile lies in its unique terroir: a porphyritic morainic soil mixed with limestone deposits, which naturally imparts remarkable structural depth and a monumental cellaring potential ranging from 6 to 10 years.
Winemaking: Spontaneous Fermentation and Fine Oak Aging
The grapes are hand-picked and meticulously selected in multiple passes between late September and early October. This is followed by a 12-hour maceration in the press, conducted partly via whole-cluster pressing to extract the finest and most elegant aromatic precursors. Driven exclusively by native yeasts, fermentation begins spontaneously and continues over several weeks. The wine then matures for 12 months in oak barrels, where it undergoes full malolactic fermentation (biological de-acidification), followed by an additional 6 months of refinement in large wooden casks before being bottled in March 2024.
Tasting Notes: Full-Bodied Structure with Crisp Acidity
In the glass, the Schloss Englar Belasy Riserva 2022 displays a rich, intense, and luminous straw-yellow color. The nose opens with a deep, multifaceted bouquet reminiscent of ripe exotic fruits, pome fruits (apple and pear), and finely integrated toasted aromas. On the palate, the wine is rich, voluminous, and beautifully textured, masterfully balanced by a crisp, lively acidity and subtle, elegant undertones of vanilla. The finish is remarkably persistent and harmonious, testifying to its incredible cellaring potential.
Food Pairings and Sommelier Serving Tips
The substantial structure of this premium Alto Adige Chardonnay makes it a magnificent companion for rich, upscale cuisine. It pairs beautifully with fine seafood, shellfish, and roasted white meats. Furthermore, its creaminess makes it a textbook match for rich risottos, truffle-infused dishes, and delicate meat or fish carpaccio.
We recommend serving it at a temperature of 10–12°C in large, wide-bowled glasses to allow its complex bouquet to fully open up.
The Story of the Warm 2022 Vintage
The 2022 vintage will be remembered by all as a remarkably warm yet beautifully balanced year. Following a very dry and mild winter, a cool spring slightly slowed down the bud break. The characteristically dry summer concluded in late July and early August with heat-induced thunderstorms and refreshing rain showers. Thanks to excellent autumn weather, the estate harvested exceptionally healthy grapes at optimal ripeness. The wines of the 2022 vintage are incredibly compelling, showing superb harmony, fruit density, and perfect structural balance.
