Scampato Salina IGP Rosso Caravaglio
Scampato is a rare and profound wine, born from a historic vineyard planted with Corinto Nero in the heart of the Fossa del Monte crater on Lipari. Here, in volcanic soils of sand, pumice, and ash, centuries-old ungrafted vines thrive. They survived phylloxera and were restored in 2018 by Antonino Caravaglio, who brought this precious plot back into production using manual and traditional practices, including the "in funnu" vine, typical of the Aeolian Islands.
The 2021 vintage marks the return of this vineyard to its full expression, with a limited and artisanal production. Harvesting is done by hand in mid-September. The vinification process is long and meticulous: the grapes are destemmed and fermented on the skins for 30 days, with a third of the bunches left whole, giving the wine greater aromatic complexity and depth. It is then aged for at least 18 months in 500-liter oak barrels before bottling, without fining or invasive filtration.
In the glass, Scampato displays an intense ruby red color with purple highlights. The nose opens with notes of ripe red fruits—black cherry, plum, and blackberry—followed by spicy aromas, hints of sweet vanilla, and balsamic notes. The palate is ample, warm, and structured, with elegant, velvety tannins balanced by a lively acidity that sustains a long finish.
Perfect with savory first courses, stewed or grilled red meats, aged cheeses, and local cured meats. It is also ideal for sipping on its own, to fully appreciate its richness and depth.
